Carlos took a curve and said, "Really. I mean, I'm sick of her always hurting me and acting like she's not. I just want to be over her." Emily sighed, "Well, I can't help you there."
They drove the rest of the way in silence. When they arrived, Carlos, once again, opened the door for Emily and they went inside.
"Okay, what's you most favorite holiday?" Emily asked. They'd been asking each other questions like this for the past twenty minutes, every since Emily had said that they'd changed and didn't know each other anymore. "That one's always hard. I guess I have to say Christmas." "Me too!" Emily exclaimed. "Yeah, but I've got to say that Thanksgiving is close behind," Carlos said. "Agreed. Thanksgiving is amazing. I love all the food and getting together with the family." "I agree about the food, but not so much about the family. My mom always trys to call me every year at Thanksgiving and I never answer," he said.
"Why not?"
"I'm scared to. The only time she was in my life, she hurt me. She was supposed to give me all these great experiences, but she didn't. She gave me some of the worst times of my life, and she just wants me to forget that. I can't."
"I can understand that, Carlos," Emily paused, "but what if she has changed. What if she just wants back in your life a little? Imagine how much it would hurt, knowing that you hurt your son so much, that he wouldn't even talk to you."
"And if she has changed? What?" Carlos asked. He played with the straw in his drink.
"I'm just saying, maybe you'll regret not answering one day. You only have so much time, Carlos. Don't you at least want to be able to say that you tried to get to know her?" Emily asked.
"I'll think about it," he said, raising his fork to his mouth.
Emily pulled out her cell phone. "It's 10:46," she informed him. "Are you done eating?" he asked her. "Yeah, you?" "Yeah."
Carlos was heading straight for the candy. It was now 10:58. He reached the spot he'd been heading for and stopped. Emily looked around.
"Where are these magnificent candy bars you keep telling me about?" she asked.
Carlos scoured the rows and rows of candy, before finally finding the huge Hershey's bar he'd been looking for. He picked it up and hid it behind his back.
"Loser! Oh my God! Just show me the freakin' candy bar," Emily said laughing. Carlos pulled it from behind his back slowly and Emily yanked it out of his hands. "That's huge," she said. It was 5 lb.

"Awesome, huh?" he said. "How much is it?" she asked. "$36." "You can't get me this," Emily said. "Yes, I can, and I am. Don't argue with me on this, please." Emily realized that he would buy it either way and decided to stop hassling him.
"How long is it?" Emily asked. "It says it's 18 inches," Carlos replied. "Damn," Emily said. "We probably need a buggy," he said. "I'll go get one. You stay here."
Emily was soon back with a buggy and they were off again. Soon, they were just tossing things into the buggy, anything and everything. Emily tossed in some Juicee Gummee's.

"Those look good," Carlos said. "Yeah, that's why I put them in." They were heading by the clothes now. "Ooh. These jeans are cute," Emily said. They were bright blue skinny jeans. "Put them in." "They're $20 though," Emily said. "Put them in." Emily tossed in some grey capris that said live love laugh on the side. She threw in a three pack of thongs and Carlos laughed, "Your dad's just going to love it when he finds out who bought those for you." She put in several more thongs. Soon, she had added a bag, khakis, 3 boxer shorts, and two shirts. They headed to the health and beauty department. There they picked up some perfume for Emily, True Star by Tommy Hilfiger. After that, they headed for the Jewelry department. There, Carlos got her a ruby ring. By now, it was 11:36 and they headed for the checkout. All together, they'd spent $218.28. That was when they left for Emily's house.
"You didn't have to spend so much on me," Emily said. "Yeah, well, it's Valentine's Day," Carlos said shrugging. "Thanks," she said. "I'm just trying to figure out how to explain all this stuff? We supposedly went bowling, remember?" "Oh, shit. Just say that we got done early and went into Walmart for a shopping spree. "Alright."
"Can Carlos come in, Dad?" Emily asked. James glanced at his watch, "Well, since he did get you home eight minutes early, I guess so." "Thank you," Carlos said, stepping inside.
"It's a lot different," he said looking around. The paintings on the wall had changed, he noticed. "Yeah, well, you haven't been in the house for a few years," Emily said. "True."
"Dad, can I show Carlos my room?" she asked. James sighed and thought for a moment, "Make it quick." "Okay," she said. They went up the stairs to her room. "Nice," he said. "Thanks."
Emily closed the door. "Do you think your dad will come up here?" Carlos asked. "Not for at least fifteen minutes," Emily said. "Finally, a specific answer," he said locking the door. Emily laughed.
Carlos grabbed her waist and pushed her onto the bed. He smiled, "Your bed is nice too." Emily laughed and kissed him. Carlos slipped his tongue into her mouth and Emily groaned. He pushed his hands under her shirt and she helped guide them up. Finally, he pulled the shirt off. As he kissed her chest, she ran her fingers through his hair. She pulled herself on top of him and began to take off his shirt. "How much time has it been?" he asked. "About ten minutes." "We have to get back down there, Emily." He kissed her neck one last time and then they started getting themselves back to how they'd been before they'd come up to her room.
About three minutes later, they walked down the stairs. Carlos smiled, "She's got a pretty amazing room, sir." "Well, that's all her," James said. Carlos pressed his lips tight to keep from smiling and nodded. He turned to Emily. "You need to get the stuff out of my truck," he said. "What stuff?" James asked. "We got done bowling and then we went to Walmart and shopped for a while," Emily explained. "Oh," James said. They went outside and together, hauled her stuff inside. James's jaw dropped when he saw the many bags. "You paid for all this?" he asked. "Yes, sir," Carlos said. "I'll have to refund this money," James started and then began to mumble something about 'expensive, credit, deserving'. "You don't have to do any of that. I bought it for her because I wanted to. It's all good." Emily smiled. "Well, thank you so much. It's already past midnight so I think you should go," James said looking at his watch. Carlos nodded and then he kissed Emily. "Goodnight, Emily." Emily bit her bottom lip and smiled, "Goodnight, Carlos."
"What the hell, Emily?" James asked. "What, Dad?" "What's all this crap?" "Just candy and clothes and stuff," Emily replied grabbing up three bags. "Hold up," James said. "What now, Dad? I'm tired and I just want to get to sleep." "You two were up in your room for about fifteen minutes," James said. Emily sighed, "God, get over it! We just kissed, Dad. Carlos isn't a bad guy, okay?"
"He smirked when I said that you made the room awesome," James said. "I didn't say he was perfect. He's still a guy. But he was really good to me tonight, Dad. Please, just let it be." "Fine. I still don't trust him, though." Emily rolled her eyes and lugged the three bags in her arms up to her room. "Do you want me to help you get the rest?" he asked. "Just go to bed, Dad. I can get them." James sighed, but stalked off to his bedroom.
