GHOST PRESIDENT
Adam pulled his gaze away from her deep emerald eyes and walked over his car with his hands in his pockets.
A couple hours later, Adam found himself sitting in a classic hippie den. The smell of marijuana was so strong that upon first entering, he actually coughed. Five or so other girls shared the apartment with Cady, and they were all gathered in a circle in the floor. With their legs crossed or pulled up to their chests, they passed a joint around as Yesterday by the Beatles played. Some of the girls in the circle sang along or swayed with the music. The girl on Adam’s right held out the joint to him. He took it and passed it on without taking a hit.
“You really should try that the next go ‘round,” the girl to his right said.
She had blonde wavy hair with two small braids meeting in the middle of the back of her head. She was dressed just like all the others in the circle, excluding Adam. Adam actually didn’t fit in with the group at all. He might do drugs, but when it left that one category, Adam and hippies were very different. When it came to politics, the whole “war is evil” thing just didn’t make sense to him. It’s not that Adam saw war as a good thing; he didn’t. Adam saw war as a necessary thing, something that was completely and totally inevitable. He thought anyone who believed otherwise was foolish, and he wasn’t afraid to admit it, even in a room of hippies.
That’s why when the conversation turned to politics, he didn’t shy away. Sure, Adam hadn’t really been paying attention to politics lately, but he still knew what he believed, and he’d make it a point to prove his beliefs to anyone who didn’t agree. So as soon as one of the girls in the circle brought up how evil she found war, Adam declared her wrong.
“War can be the right thing to do.”
“Right? How is murder right?” one of the girls instantly retorted.
“Murder isn’t right, but war isn’t murder. War is sacrificing a few for millions. In the grand scheme of things, thousands of lives are a small sacrifice for the dignity and security of our nation.”
Sensing the girls struggle, even for a second, for a response made Adam feel like a winner, something he hadn’t felt in a long time. How had he forgotten how much politics had meant to him? What had happened to his dream of becoming the greatest American President in history? Had everything he loved really dissolved into a sea of drugs and booze? Cady’s response cut off his thought.
“Maybe if all politicians weren’t blood hungry liars, they’d actually try and talk things out.”
Adam laughed, “Talk things out? Right, because everybody loves to be told they’re wrong, and I’m right. No politician worth a shit is going to change his mind just because of a talk. Any man who doesn’t stick to his beliefs doesn’t deserve the power of a politician. Weak people change their minds. Only strong people can choose a side and stick with it.”
“How is someone weak for realizing the error of their ways?” a girl across the circle asked.
“They’re weak because they made an error in the first place. Being careful when you choose an opinion can prevent that. Rushing to a judgment is opening yourself up for a failure.”
