mark and mellisa

mark and mellisa sat at a table at the cafe across from each other. "you dating anyone?" mark asked drinking his coffee slowly. "nope, i'm single." "well, that's good. you don't need a boyfriend anyway. all they are is trouble," mark told her. mellisa laughed, "exactly what i think." "how you are liking college so far?" it was another small talk question, but mellisa knew it just took him a little while to warm up. "well, i'm doing pretty good in all the classes, so that's awesome." "yeah, that' really good. you adjusting well and everything?" mark asked. "definitely." "i bet you like all the extra freedom," mark said laughing. mellisa smiled, "you know it." "well, i'm not going to work just yet so if you don't have a class you could come to my house and maybe give me some new perspective on a few cases if you swear not to tell?" mark asked. mellisa didn't know if he meant not to tell that she went to his house or not to tell about the cases. either way she said, "yeah, sure. i don't have class for another hour." "really? great! i'm kind of in a rut. you'll really help me out?" "of course," mellisa said smiling. "it's not that big of a deal. i'm happy to help anytime." "gosh, that's so nice to hear. amanda doesn't want anything to do with any of it," mark said. "she's just busy with her own.. stuff." "yeah, i just wish she'd sometimes try and at least pretend to be interested." mark sounded seriously disappointed which mellisa really didn't like. he sounded so pitiful. "mark, don't take it personally. she's a teenager. sorry to tell you, but she doesn't really care about law cases," mellisa said. "you're still a teenager," mark protested. "i'm not your daughter. i'm far from it," mellisa said smiling. mark just looked at her. "you're right," he finally said. mellisa smiled, "so, are you ready to go?" "uhm.. what?" mark asked. it took him a second to realize what she'd asked. "yeah, sorry. i wasn't listening... or thinking." mellisa just laughed, "it's okay."
